President Obama jokingly sympathized with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Thursday that he might see a mass migration of Americans to Canada next year if Donald Trump or Sen. Ted Cruz wins the U.S. presidency.

“Every time we have a presidential election, our friends to the north have to brace for an exodus of Americans who swear they’ll move to Canada if the guy from the other party wins,” Mr. Obama said at a White House news conference. “But typically it turns out fine.”

Mr. Trudeau, who shares a liberal agenda with Mr. Obama, said he will work with the new American president whether he or she is a Democrat or Republican.

“I have tremendous confidence in the American people,” Mr. Trudeau said.

The president said he is “absolutely certain” that during his re-election campaign in 2012, “there were folks threatening to go to Canada as well.”
