Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill said Thursday that former GOP Rep. Todd Akin - who she defeated in the 2012 U.S. Senate race in Missouri - would make a fine running mate for Donald Trump this year.
“At least he learned how to apologize, he’s got political experience - that would be Todd Akin,” Ms. McCaskill said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “The perfect vice president for Donald Trump.”
“I think Todd Akin would be perfect,” she said.
Ms. McCaskill had been considered one of the most endangered Democratic senators in the country in 2012, but got a boost when Mr. Akin unexpectedly won the state’s Republican primary and then infamously said that in a “legitimate rape,” a woman’s body “has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
Even before those comments, Ms. McCaskill’s campaign had been actively meddling in the GOP primary race, calling him “the most conservative congressman in Missouri” in one ad.
