Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a hero to progressives, will endorse Hillary Clinton for president now that the former first lady is the presumptive Democratic nominee, Reuters news agency reported.
Citing unnamed sources, the news agency said that Mrs. Warren is not now interested in being Mrs. Clinton’s running mate, but “won’t rule out” that possibility.
Many progressives tried last year to coax Mrs. Warren into running for president herself, because of their longstanding distrust of Mrs. Clinton, but the Massachusetts senator and former Harvard law professor declined. Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont eventually emerged as the progressive champion and made a real race of the Democratic primary in a way Bill Bradley never did in a similar scenario in 2000, against Democratic establishment choice Al Gore.
Mrs. Clinton effectively wrapped up the Democratic nomination Tuesday night with victories in the California and New Jersey primaries.
