GOP Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois said Tuesday he will not support Donald Trump for president, in a reversal from previous comments saying he would back Mr. Trump if he was the Republican nominee.

Mr. Kirk, who faces a tough re-election campaign this year, said Mr. Trump’s belief that an American-born judge of Mexican descent is incapable of fairly presiding over his Trump University case is not only dead wrong, but “un-American.”

Mr. Kirk said Mr. Trump’s recent attacks invoking Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s Mexican heritage, in the context of other attacks, “make it certain that I cannot and will not support my party’s nominee for president regardless of the political impact on my candidacy or the Republican party.”

“After much consideration, I have concluded that Donald Trump has not demonstrated the temperament necessary to assume the greatest office in the world,” Mr. Kirk said.
