An upcoming film on the story of Jesus Christ will allow viewers to experience his life in a new way: virtual reality.

“Jesus VR – The Story of Christ” is scheduled for release this Christmas. The film’s executive producer, Enzo Sisti, also worked on “The English Patient” and Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ.”

Producer David Hansen told Vanity Fair Thursday that utilizing virtual reality is the “perfect” way to tell “the most powerful story of all time.”

“The viewers truly feel they are there with Jesus and his disciples,” Mr. Hansen told the entertainment magazine.

Messers. Sisti and Hansen may have a cash cow on their hands if they can deliver on the VR front. Mel Gibson’s “Passion of the Christ” grossed over $611 million worldwide in 2004 on a $30 million budget.

History’s “The Bible,” which was executive produced by Mark Burnett and his wife Roma Downey, also garnered record ratings when it premiered in 2013.

“I am beyond thrilled to be a part of this groundbreaking project. It’s as exciting a take on the story of Christ as I’ve ever seen and its production values will absolutely set a new benchmark for virtual reality,” Mr. Sisti said in a statement, Vanity Fair reported.

“Jesus VR” was shot in 60-degree 4K video on location in Matera, Italy, in October 2015. It will be available on all major mobile and premium VR platforms.
