Hollywood producer and director Judd Apatow has a new theory to explain the source of months of criticism of the upcoming all-female “Ghostbusters”: It’s from Donald Trump supporters.
Sony Pictures Entertainment’s upcoming release has the dubious distinction of having the most-disliked movie trailer in YouTube’s history and months of bad press, but the “Trainwreck” director said a “Ghostbusters” box-office disaster will be the result of the billionaire’s followers.
“I would assume there’s a very large crossover of people who are doubtful ’Ghostbusters’ will be great and people excited about the Donald Trump candidacy,” Mr. Apatow told Uproxx Wednesday.
The producer’s comments ignore the fact that feminists were livid after finding out that Leslie Jones, the film’s lone minority star, is the only lead actress not playing a scientist. She plays a New York City metro worker named Patty Tolan instead.
“’Ghostbusters’ will be great, and people will just be happy to have it,” Mr. Apatow said. “It’s not like anybody really cares about a couple of idiots who hold onto the idea that things never evolve.”
Entertainment websites have calculated since March that “Ghostbusters” has more than “a couple of idiots” who think it looks disappointing. Sony’s YouTube channel recorded almost 860,000 “dislikes” on 33 million views for the movie’s trailer — more than any other in YouTube’s history.
The film, which comes out July 15, also stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon. The Paul Feig-directed project had a budget of $154 million.
