Donald Trump’s campaign is reportedly eying Mike Ditka as a possible speaker for next month’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
“Da Coach” came out in favor of Mr. Trump months ago — before the billionaire went on become the party’s presumptive presidential nominee. Sources close to the selection process told Bloomberg News on Tuesday that Mr. Ditka may be approached for a speaking role for the July 18-21 convention.
“Obama is the worst president we’ve ever had,” Mr. Ditka told the “Bernie and Sid Show,” the Sporting News reported March 3. “I mean, he’s pleasant. He would be great to play golf with. He’s not a leader. This country needs leadership. It needs direction. It needs somebody that steps up front. We need somebody like Ronald Reagan.”
The 1985 NFL Super Bowl champion then said Mr. Trump’s campaign needed support because the U.S. is currently “devoid of leadership.”
Bloomberg’s sources also said former Indiana University basketball coach Bobby Knight and NASCAR chief Brian France were being considered for speaking roles.
The Trump campaign denied that iconic boxer Mike Tyson was on its short list, although the billionaire said he would would “do a good job” if asked.
