Sen. Marco Rubio should pay back taxpayers for the votes and committee meetings he missed while running for president, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid insisted Tuesday, delivering a fierce political attack on the Florida Republican.
Mr. Reid said Mr. Rubio, even as he announced his re-election bid last week, missed a key committee meeting — the latest in a string of absences that left him with a poor voting record over the last year.
“Marco Rubio should be sued,” Mr. Reid said. “Marco Rubio, in my opinion, owes the American taxpayers money.”
Candidates running for president regularly miss votes — including Sen. Bernard Sanders, a member of Mr. Reid’s caucus, who missed there vast majority of the votes between January and June of this year, according to govtrack.us.
But Mr. Reid didn’t mention Mr. Sanders, instead aiming at Mr. Rubio, who had previously said he would retire from the Senate at the end of this year, but reversed himself last week and said he would run for a second term.
