Hillary Clinton on Sunday made an unexpected visit to New York City’s annual Pride Parade and vowed that she’d fight for LGBTQ Americans if elected president.

Mrs. Clinton was joined on the surprise stop by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, the Rev. Al Sharpton, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other New York leaders. The parade came on the same weekend that President Obama designated New York City’s Stonewall Inn — the site of riots by members of the gay community against a police raid that took place at the bar in June 1969 — as the nation’s first monument honoring LGBTQ rights.

The Pride Parade began with a moment of silence for the 49 victims of a massacre at a gay club in Orlando, the worst shooting in American history. In the wake of that shooting, Mrs. Clinton has both called for tighter restrictions on gun sales and said it’s an example of the discrimination and danger LGBTQ Americans face each day.

“We can’t stop fighting until all LGBT Americans can live their lives free of prejudice, violence, and hate,” she tweeted Sunday after the parade.

Mrs. Clinton will be in Cincinnati Monday for a campaign event with Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.
