Sen. Elizabeth Warren will campaign alongside Hillary Clinton at a rally in Cincinnati on June 27, the Clinton campaign said Wednesday.
The announcement comes as Ms. Warren, Massachusetts Democrat and progressive hero, reportedly is being vetted to serve as Mrs. Clinton’s vice presidential nominee. The senator endorsed Mrs. Clinton earlier this month.
The Clinton campaign hopes the endorsement will persuade liberals — many of whom supported Sen. Bernard Sanders and remain lukewarm, at best, toward Mrs. Clinton’s candidacy — to get on board.
Next week’s Cincinnati event will focus heavily on the economy.
“Clinton and Warren will discuss their shared commitment to building an America that is stronger together and an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top,” the Clinton campaign said in a brief statement.
Republicans mocked the news by painting Ms. Warren, a fiercely anti-Wall Street populist, as the polar opposite of Mrs. Clinton, seen by many as the embodiment of the political establishment.
“This event will complete one of the biggest sellouts in political history given that Hillary Clinton is everything Elizabeth Warren supposedly stands against,” Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Short said in a statement. “Watching Elizabeth Warren defend Hillary Clinton’s refusal to turn over her Wall Street speech transcripts will be as priceless as the accounts of her attending fundraisers with the same hedge fund managers she built a career demonizing.”
Mrs. Clinton has come under intense fire, including from Mr. Sanders, for refusing to release transcripts of paid speeches she made to top Wall Street firms such as Goldman Sachs.
