Likely Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Wednesday said he learned about an alleged recent attempt on his life from watching television and commended law enforcement officials for doing a “fantastic job.”
“Actually, I learned about it watching television,” he said on Fox Business Network. “They didn’t tell me about it, and probably they’re better off not telling me about it.”
“But I learned about it watching television, and I can tell you this: We have tremendous Secret Service, and we have tremendous police throughout this country, and I think they did a fantastic job,” Mr. Trump said.
Michael Steven Sandford, who is British, approached a Las Vegas police officer at a recent Trump rally saying he was seeking an autograph from Mr. Trump, and then tried to grab the officer’s gun, according to a criminal complaint. He was quickly apprehended.
Mr. Sandford later told authorities that he had come to the rally to kill Mr. Trump and that he had been planning to kill him for about a year.
He is accused of attempting to commit an act of violence on restricted grounds.
