OPINION:
South Korea’s intelligence agency released information this week on the Islamic State’s efforts to collect information on U.S. air bases around the world in preparation for an attack.
The National Intelligence Service (NIS) reported that ISIS had collected data on 77 U.S. facilities and one primary target was Osan Air Base, South Korea. The information collected by the “Cyber Caliphate” had been disseminated to other terrorist cells through the Telegram encrypted network.
The caliphate also released details on individuals targeted in 21 countries.
U.S. commanders in South Korea were quick to assure awareness and preparation for the threat. “Through constant vigilance and regular exercises with our South Korean counterparts, we remain prepared to respond at any time to any emerging threats.
USFK remains committed to ensuring the highest degree of security on the Korean Peninsula,” said a statement from U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), reported CNN.
Fifty people have been deported from South Korea for terrorist ties. The NIS warned “terror against South Korean citizens and foreigners in this country is becoming a reality.”
