New York magazine made significant edits in addition to a headline change for a blog post it originally headlined, “Stop Bugging Hillary Clinton About Giving a Press Conference,” Politico reported Thursday afternoon
“The original version of the piece, by night editor Claire Landsbaum, suggested that by not having a news conference in months, Clinton has been simply working within her strengths the same way Donald Trump does,” Politico noted before quoting some portions of the original post which have since been deleted but which remain archived online via Archive.is.
On Tuesday, The Washington Times noted that unlike her presumptive general-election rival Donald Trump, Mrs. Clinton has yet to conduct a press conference on the campaign trail this year. Mr. Trump has had four, including his combative engagement with the campaign press Tuesday.
The “headline and force of the opinion overstepped the mark, so we edited the post and noted that it was edited,” New York Magazine spokeswoman Lauren Starke said in an email, Politico reported.
At least one conservative media watcher thinks the magazine didn’t go far enough.
“When you have to do this to your piece, you’re better off scrapping it and apologizing,” tweeted Noah Rothman of Commentary magazine.
Mr. Rothman, formerly an editor at Mediaite.com, was reacting to a tweet showing just how extensively Ms. Landsbaum’s blog post was altered — complete with red ink and strikethroughs.
