After warning supporters that a Donald Trump presidency is a very real possibility, Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign saw its fundraising numbers tick up in May, raising $27 million over the course of the month and starting June with more than $40 million in the bank.
Over the past several weeks, the campaign has appealed for donations by focusing on what it says are the risks of a Trump administration. Last week, for example, the campaign practically begged for last-minute donations by telling backers Mr. Trump “really could” win the White House unless the Clinton operation got an infusion of cash immediately.
Supporters seem to have responded, as the campaign’s May haul of $27 million beats out the roughly $24 million it raised in April.
“Thanks to the continued support of more than 1.3 million people across the country we have the resources we need to run a winning general election campaign and build on the smart investments we made during the primary,” Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said in a statement. “Hillary Clinton remains focused on ensuring that she and Democrats up and down the ballot are able to mobilize millions of voters and win in November.”
In addition, the Clinton campaign says it raised more than $13 million for the Democratic National Committee and other party arms in April.
Mrs. Clinton’s primary opponent, Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont, has not yet released May fundraising figures.
