Her campaign for U.S. Senate in 2014 got a boost in recognition after her “Squeal” ad in which she mentioned castrating hogs while growing up on a farm.

Now Iowa Republican Joni Ernst is behind a bill that would ban the Defense Department from instituting “meatless Mondays” in military mess halls, Time.com reported Friday.

Mrs. Ernst’s proposed amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2017 requires that “none of the funds authorized to be appropriated by this Act may be obligated or expended to establish or enforce ’Meatless Monday’ or any other program explicitly designed to reduce the amount of animal protein that members of the Armed Forces voluntarily consume.”

Mrs. Ernst was the first female combat veteran in the Senate, retiring in November 2015 from the Iowa Army National Guard at the rank of lieutenant colonel, the Des Moines Register reported in December.

“This was very much a part of my life and it is very difficult for me to step away because of the great people I had the opportunity to work with,” Mrs. Ernst told reporters at the time.
