Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton both have canceled plans to campaign on Friday in light of the shooting deaths of five law enforcement officers in Dallas on Thursday.

Mr. Trump had been scheduled to deliver a speech Friday afternoon in Miami, and Mrs. Clinton had been scheduled to campaign in Pennsylvania.

Vice President Joseph R. Biden had been scheduled to make his first appearance on the campaign trail for Mrs. Clinton in Scranton. The White House said Mr. Biden would instead remain in Delaware and meet with senior advisors.

Mr. Trump called the shootings, which killed five officers and wounded seven other officers in Dallas, “an attack on our country.”

Mrs. Clinton said in a Twitter message: “I mourn for the officers shot while doing their sacred duty to protect peaceful protesters, for their families & all who serve with them. -H”

The “-H” is an indication that the tweet came directly from Mrs. Clinton rather than a campaign staffer.

Mrs. Clinton’s first scheduled campaign event with President Obama, slated to take place in Wisconsin last month, also was postponed in light of the Orlando terrorist attack. Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama campaigned together earlier this week in North Carolina.
