Trea Turner started playing center field for the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs two weeks ago. At the time, Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo explained that Turner’s offense was ready for the major leagues, so they were trying to create ways for the would-be shortstop to get on the field.
The newfound versatility had less to do with Turner’s promotion to the Nationals on Friday. It was more rooted in needing a full bench during the final three games before the all-star break begins Monday.
Turner was brought up, along with Michael A. Taylor, on Friday. First baseman Ryan Zimmerman was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 7, because of a left rib cage strain.
Taylor was sent to Syracuse on July 4. He played just a game there. Turner is returns to the majors for the second time this season. He memorably went 3-for-3 in his first game for the Nationals this season, then watched the next two games from the bench. The benching caused a stir among some since shortstop Danny Espinosa was not hitting well at the time.
The season has been a struggle for Zimmerman. The 31-year-old is hitting just .221 and has become the opposing manager’s choice to pitch to in key situations. For much of his career, Zimmerman was a “clutch” hitter. This season, he is hitting .169 with runners in scoring position and is 0-for-9 with the bases loaded.
Top prospect Lucas Giolito returns to the minors after two starts. His first was a rain-shortened four innings. His second did not make it to the fourth because the New York Mets knocked him around Thursday night. He departs with a 4.70 ERA and will join Syracuse for the first time.
