President Obama said Friday that the U.S. is sending an additional 1,000 U.S. troops to Poland as part of a NATO effort to show strength against Russian aggression.
Speaking in Warsaw with Polish President Andrzej Duda, Mr. Obama said the troops will serve on a rotational basis with three other NATO battalions on the eastern flank of the alliance. He also said that a U.S. armored brigade rotating through Europe will have its headquarters in Poland.
“Poland will be seeing an increase in NATO and American personnel and in the most modern military equipment,” Mr. Obama said.
Poland and the Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia have expressed growing concern about Russia in the wake of Moscow’s military intervention in Ukraine in 2014.
