House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Friday that the snipers who killed five Dallas police officers at a Black Lives Matter protest had an “agenda of hate” and called for acts of nonviolence to end “senseless killings everywhere.”
“Many questions have yet to be answered. But whatever their motivation, it is clear that the perpetrators of this vile act have an agenda of hatred,” said Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat.
“The ambush and murder of police officers during a peaceful protest is a tragedy that tears at the heart of every American. We are horrified by this despicable act of violence, and we share in the shock and grief for the officers killed, their loved ones, and the entire Dallas community,” she said in a statement.
She appealed to people protesting police-involved shootings, which one of the snipers said was a motivation for the attack, to pursue nonviolent solutions.
“As the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, ’Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that,’” she said. “In that spirit, we must continue the work of non-violence and demand an end to senseless killing everywhere.”
