The Republican National Committee said Thursday it’s filing an open-records request seeking Hillary Clinton’s work-related emails the FBI discovered in its investigation of her private email setup.
“Hillary Clinton failed to turn over ’several thousand’ work-related emails despite falsely claiming she had done so to the State Department, the American people, and a federal court under penalty of perjury,” said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.
FBI Director James Comey said earlier in the week that investigators discovered “several thousand” work-related emails separate from the approximately 30,000 emails Mrs. Clinton said she turned over to the State Department in 2014.
Mr. Comey also said Mrs. Clinton’s lawyers didn’t read every message when they decided which ones were work-related and that it’s likely that there are other work-related emails now gone because the lawyers cleaned her email servers in a way that would prevent complete forensic recovery.
Mr. Comey said that while the former secretary of state was reckless in her email setup, he would not recommend bringing charges for mishandling classified information. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Wednesday she would follow that recommendation and not pursue criminal charges in the case.
