Sen. Ted Cruz said Thursday that he accepted Donald Trump’s request to speak at the Republican National Convention later this month in Cleveland, but that the subject of a possible endorsement did not come up at a meeting earlier in the day in Washington, D.C.
“We had a positive and productive meeting this morning with Donald Trump,” Mr. Cruz said. “Donald asked me to speak at the Republican convention, and I told him I’d be happy to do so.”
Mr. Cruz and several other former 2016 GOP presidential rivals of Mr. Trump have yet to offer a formal endorsement. Mr. Cruz said there was “no discussion” of any endorsement in the meeting.
“I’m going to urge Americans to get back to the Constitution — to change the path we’re on,” Mr. Cruz said.
“Eight failed years of the Obama-Clinton economy, eight failed years of a presidency disregarding the Constitution and Bill of Rights, eight failed years of a commander in chief not protecting America [and] keeping us safe from radical Islamic terrorism — it’s time for that to end,” he said.
Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier also said Mr. Trump asked the Texas senator for his counsel on future judicial nominations, and Mr. Cruz said he “would continue to do everything he can to help ensure principled constitutionalists on the courts.”
