Hours after the FBI director called Hillary Clinton “extremely careless” in the handling of her private email system, the White House said President Obama remains “enthusiastic” about her presidential bid.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters on Air Force One, which was flying Mrs. Clinton and the president to a campaign rally in North Carolina, that the president is “aware” of the FBI’s recommendation that no charges be filed against Mrs. Clinton. He said no one at the White House received a heads-up about the FBI’s recommendation, or even that Director James B. Comey would make his announcement Tuesday morning.
Mr. Obama remains “enthusiastic about her candidacy,” Mr. Earnest said.
“The president will deliver a forceful case about Secretary Clinton’s qualifications and values that she would bring to the job of president of the United States,” he said, adding that Mr. Obama “has a lot invested in the success of her campaign.”
