Rep. Mark Meadows, North Carolina Republican, said on Tuesday that it’s time for Hillary Clinton to apologize to the American people, in the wake of FBI Director James B. Comey’s announcement that his agency would not be recommending Mrs. Clinton face criminal charges over her private email use.

Mr. Meadows said it’s “interesting” that Mrs. Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, will be campaigning in Charlotte with President Obama on Tuesday.

“The vast majority of North Carolinians across the state … they see this particular issue of the emails as being foundational,” Mr. Meadows said on Fox Business Network. “The fact that she can’t be trusted, that she has just unbelievable negative polling numbers.”

Earlier Tuesday, Mr. Comey said that while Mrs. Clinton was reckless with the private email set-up she used as secretary of state, no criminal charges would be appropriate in the case.

“I think here in North Carolina what we’ll also see is that it is time that she makes an apology to the American people,” Mr. Meadows said. “Apologize for misleading them, whether it’s on Benghazi or the emails. Within a week now, we know that she has told us falsehoods with regards to Benghazi and now the emails.”

“It’s time that she apologizes to the American people,” he said.

Mr. Meadows said he has “great respect” for Mr. Comey and said that while the FBI director stopped short of recommending a prosecution, he did poke holes in Mrs. Clinton’s previous statements and explanations about her email set-up.

“I think the jury is still out,” Mr. Meadows said. “The jury really will be the American people — perhaps not a jury of her peers.”
