PHILADELPHIA — Donald Trump’s campaign chairman said on Friday if it’s “midnight in America” — a line Hillary Clinton used in her Thursday speech at the Democratic National Convention — it’s because of Mrs. Clinton and President Obama.

“If it’s midnight in America, it’s because of the seven-and-a-half years of the Obama-Clinton administration,” Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort said on “Fox and Friends.”

“Donald Trump says America is great,” Mr. Manafort said. “But the problem is the American people don’t feel that their future is what they want it to be.”

In her speech Thursday, Mrs. Clinton had borrowed a line from a 1984 Ronald Reagan ad to try to illustrate how far Mr. Trump has taken the GOP.

“He’s taken the Republican party a long way from ’morning in America’ to ’midnight in America,’ ” Mrs. Clinton said.
