PHILADELPHIA — Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, the Democrats’ 2016 vice presidential nominee, said the party is more unified than it was at this point eight years ago and that supporters of Sen. Bernard Sanders understand that GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump is “a threat to everything they care about.”
“I actually think where we are now — we’re farther ahead than we were eight years ago in getting people to unify, and Secretary Clinton’s done a really good job at this,” Mr. Kaine said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Thursday.
Mr. Kaine formally accepted the party’s vice presidential nomination Wednesday evening at the Democratic National Convention.
He said that as a big supporter of President Obama in 2008, he was involved in trying to pull everyone together and get Hillary Clinton supporters on board after the Democratic primary.
“I think Hillary and Bernie have done well, and Bernie was really, really good Monday night, I thought,” Mr. Kaine said.
“And look, to Bernie supporters I know and Bernie Sanders, they understand who Hillary is and they understand that Donald Trump is a threat to everything that they care about,” he said. “So, I feel like we’re in real good shape, and you see the way the arc of this convention has gone, too.”
“It started off with some turmoil and some churn, but there’s been a direct arc to unification and an awareness that the stakes are high, and we got to pull together to win,” Mr. Kaine said.
