PHILADELPHIA — He may have been lukewarm on Donald Trump at last week’s GOP convention, but House Speaker Paul D. Ryan gives his party’s presidential nominee a glowing recommendation in a new fundraising email Thursday, saying he will “forge a path for real conservative reform.”
Mr. Ryan had previously questioned Mr. Trump’s bona fides, saying the billionaire businessman was “not my kind of conservative.”
And in his speech at last week’s convention, Mr. Ryan was not overly enthusiastic about Mr. Trump, giving him only slightly more backing than did Sen. Ted Cruz, who flat-out refused to endorse the nominee.
On Thursday, however, Mr. Ryan said Mr. Trump will pursue a conservative agenda.
“I have full faith Donald Trump and Mike Pence will forge a path for real conservative reform in America,” he said in the email, sent by House Republicans’ campaign arm. “It would be a shame if we weren’t able to deliver a Republican Congress to back them up.”
Mr. Ryan also complained in the email about the rhetoric coming out of Philadelphia, where Democrats are holding their convention this week.
“Unfortunately, we’re only going to hear more and more of these liberal lies between now and Election Day,” the Wisconsin Republican said.
