PHILADELPHIA — Democrats broke new political ground Thursday by hosting a speech from the first transgender person in major party history.
“My name is Sarah McBride and I am a proud transgender American,” Ms. McBride said in introducing herself to delegates in Philadelphia.
Just a few years after the Supreme Court established same-sex marriage as a national right, the battle has turned to transgender issues, such as what bathroom they are allowed to use.
That was mocked by a gay man who spoke at last week’s GOP convention, and who called the culture wars a distraction.
But speakers at the Democratic convention in Philadelphia said the bathroom fight was a major battle for equality.
