House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says “the three G’s” are preventing Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign from gaining traction with white males: God, guns and gay people.
The California Democrat sat down with PBS Newshour on Tuesday night to discuss the 2016 presidential election. When journalist Judy Woodruff asked why Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump polls so well with white men compared with Mrs. Clinton, she replied, “So many times, white — non-college-educated — white males have voted Republican. They voted against their own economic interests because of guns, because of gays, and because of God, the three G’s — God being the woman’s right to choose.”
Mrs. Pelosi said it was incumbent upon Mrs. Clinton to put forth a strong economic agenda to mitigate her problems with the voting block.
“We’re about rejecting trickle-down economics, instead an economy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few,” the lawmaker said. “In terms of winning the election, it’s all about turnout and how we connect with the voter as to what it means in their lives to turn out to vote, to win the House, the Senate, statehouses, state governorships and the rest. So, turnout is everything.”
The House Minority Leader’s comments were reminiscent of then-Sen. Obama’s comments during an April, 13, 2008, fundraiser in San Francisco, California, as he ran for president.
“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not,” Mr. Obama said at the time. “And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

Mrs. Pelosi also said Mrs. Clinton is better prepared to become president than George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Mr. Obama.
“For me, it’s particularly almost emotional to think that she will have that much power to help develop a consensus in our country and be the leader of the free world,” Mrs. Pelosi said.
