PHILADELPHIA — Chelsea Clinton told Democratic delegates at a gay rights event Wednesday that the Republican Party’s endorsement of “conversion therapy” in their platform would encourage child abuse.

“I thought about what I found most offensive last week, and it’s hard,” said Ms. Clinton, who added that Democratic voters should be motivated by the “open embrace of conversion therapy in the Republican Party Platform.”

“In other words, child abuse,” she said. “We need to ensure that we can elect people that share our values so that my mom can pass the Equality Act, and so that my mom can federally ban conversion therapy.”

A plank in the Republican Party platform states that parents of LGBT children should be allowed to take them for therapy that aims to change a person’s sexual orientation.

“I do believe this is the most important connection of my lifetime,” Ms. Clinton said at the Human Rights Campaign luncheon. “I thought about what I found most offensive last week, its hard to pick just one part. The Republican rhetoric, which was divisive, degrading, demeaning. Or the Republican Party platform, which was the antithesis of what we have here.”
