PHILADELPHIA — Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman said Monday that Debbie Wasserman Schultz did what she needed to do in resigning her post as chair of the Democratic National Committee, but that it’s Ms. Wasserman Schultz’s choice to appear onstage to officially open and close the convention.
“I think that was her choice, and I think that we’re moving on,” Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “Look, we’re excited about what’s happening tonight.”
Just before Mr. Podesta’s appearance, former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, who’s chairing the host committee for the Democratic National Convention, had said it would be a mistake to let Ms. Wasserman Schultz on the stage after all that’s transpired in recent days.
Asked if it would be best for Mrs. Clinton if Ms. Wasserman Schultz did not open the convention, Mr. Podesta said: “It’s best for Hillary Clinton that we have a new chair of the party.”
Ms. Wasserman Schultz announced on Sunday she would step down from her post chairing the DNC after the convention. The announcement came after WikiLeaks had released an embarrassing trove of internal DNC communications that showed DNC staff tossing around the narrative that Sen. Bernard Sanders was running a mess of a campaign.
