The chief strategist for presumed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said Sunday that the primary elections “were fair,” despite leaked emails showing top Democratic officials plotting to undermine primary candidate Bernard Sanders.

Joel Benenson said Sunday he does not believe the Democratic National Committee played a decisive role in determining the outcome of the primaries.

“I think these elections were fair,” Mr. Benenson said on “Fox News Sunday,” adding that the race was “largely fought on the ground with voters.”

WikiLeaks released nearly 20,000 hacked DNC emails last week showing top party officials conspiring to undercut Mr. Sanders’s campaign.

In one email, DNC chief financial officer Brad Marshall suggested getting someone to ask Mr. Sanders on the campaign trail whether he was an atheist.

“This could make several points difference with my peeps,” Mr. Marshall wrote. “My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist.”

Mr. Sanders on Sunday called the emails “outrageous” but said he was still committed to supporting Mrs. Clinton in the general election.

He said Republican nominee Donald Trump “must not become president of the United States.”
