CLEVELAND — Donald Trump took a spin through the GOP’s convention hall and did a microphone check Thursday afternoon, jokingly pronouncing himself a fan of the press.
“I love the media. They’re so honest. They’re such honorable people,” he said, adding, “it’s about time I said that.”
Later Thursday he will deliver his speech accepting Republicans’ presidential nomination, and closing out the four-day convention. He and his daughter Ivanka, who will introduce him, were testing out the stage, and drew a giant crowd of photographers.
The billionaire businessman has had a contentious relationship with the press, including ousting news outlets from covering his campaign because he thought they treated him unfairly. But he’s also been far more accessible, regularly holding press conferences — something his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, hasn’t done once this year.
In addition to proclaiming his love for the press, he also praised the police and said he loves Cleveland, which has hosted the convention. Presumably those were more heartfelt than his love for the media.
