CLEVELAND — Former Virginia Attorney General Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II said things got so heated after Sen. Ted Cruz’s speech at the Republican National Convention Wednesday evening that he warded off members of his own state’s delegation to help escort Mr. Cruz’s wife, Heidi, away from the convention floor.
“People behind her were getting very ugly and physically approaching her,” Mr. Cuccinelli told reporters on the convention floor after Mr. Cruz’s speech. “It was not a pretty situation.”
“The decision was instantly made to not talk to media and get immediately out of the arena,” he said. “People from my own delegation were physically approaching her while yelling at her, so I physically moved media out of her way and got in the way of my own delegation so she could clear by and get out of the arena.”
“That was very disappointing,” Mr. Cuccinelli said. “I don’t care what you think of the speech. Families are out of bounds for everyone else in America, and not here.”
Mr. Cruz was booed by the crowd after he did not endorse Republican nominee Donald Trump in his speech.
