CLEVELAND — Americans are less safe today than when they elected President Obama and he chose Hillary Clinton as his top diplomat, Donald Trump will say Thursday, and he will promise to bring a steadier hand to the White House in dealing with unrest at home and the threat of terrorism across the globe, according to excerpts of his convention speech.
Describing a country reeling from economic stagnation and a loss of confidence, the GOP presidential nominee will hijack Mr. Obama’s own 2008 campaign theme, promising to be the real agent of change the country has been waiting for.
“My message is that things have to change — and they have to change right now,” he says, vowing to be a fighter for all Americans.
He promised tax cuts to spur the economy and create jobs, said he’ll carve through the mass of red tape regulations that have stifled productivity, and will invest in infrastructure.
“Every day I wake up determined to deliver a better life for the people all across this nation that have been neglected, ignored, and abandoned,” Mr. Trump will say.
He also said Mr. Obama likely “truly regrets” having tapped Mrs. Clinton to head the State Department.
