Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told the thousands that showered Sen. Ted Cruz with boos at the Republican National Convention that they “misunderstood” the Texan’s refusal to explicity endorse Donald Trump.

“Ted Cruz said, ’You can vote your conscience for anyone who will uphold the Constitution,’” Mr. Gingrich said, playing damage control for Mr. Cruz. “In this election there is only one candidate who will support the Constitution.”

“So to paraphrase Ted Cruz, if you want to protect the Constitution your only possible choice this fall is the Trump-Pence,” Mr. Gingrich said.

Mr. Cruz did not endorse Mr. Trump, ignoring the shouts from the crowd demanding that he publicly voice his support for the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

The move was viewed as a strategic move aimed at laying the groundwork for a future presidential bid.
