Sen. Mike Lee said Tuesday called on Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus to apologize to GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump for the chaos that marred the first day of the party’s national convention.
“That was Reince Priebus’ fault,” the Utah Republican told reporters on the convention floor. “Reince Priebus owes Donald Trump an apology.”
A ruckus erupted on the convention floor Monday when the convention chair forced through rules that crushed efforts by anti-Trump delegates to attempt to block him from the nomination.
The episode angered the anti-Trump delegates, many of whom in the primary race backed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, an close ally of Mr. Lee.
Mr. Lee said the fallout from the rules battle could end up hurting Mr. Trump more than if the RNC allowed a floor fight for the nomination.
“Trump needs the help of those people to get elected in November,” said Mr. Lee.
