CLEVELAND — Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the first sitting U.S. senator to endorse Donald Trump for president, will formally put Mr. Trump’s name forward for the GOP presidential nomination as part of day two of the Republican National Convention on Tuesday.
Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort said at a press briefing that Mr. Sessions has become a “very close personal friend and adviser” to Mr. Trump.
One seconding speech will be given by Rep. Chris Collins of New York, the first sitting congressman to endorse Mr. Trump, and another will be made by South Carolina Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster, who endorsed Mr. Trump ahead of his win in the South Carolina primary.
Mr. McMaster was somebody who was “instrumental in Mr. Trump’s victory in South Carolina, which was an important part of his victory,” Mr. Manafort said.
The theme of the convention for Tuesday is “Make America Work Again,” with a focus on issues like jobs and the economy.
Scheduled speakers include House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.
Also scheduled to speak are two of Mr. Trump’s children: Tiffany Trump and Donald Trump Jr.
