CLEVELAND — Milwaukee County, Wisconsin Sheriff David Clarke made a forceful case in favor of the law enforcement community Monday and said presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump is the kind of leader the country needs.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to make something very clear: Blue lives matter in America,” Sheriff Clarke said on the opening night of the Republican National Convention, when the theme was “Make America Safe Again.”
“American law enforcement officers understand that race is and has been a heated issue in our country,” he said. “Most appreciate the vital need for thoroughness and transparency in pursuit of the greater good in their actions, and in their investigations.”
Law enforcement has come into renewed focus recently in light of the killings of three officers Sunday in Baton Rouge and the killings of five officers in Dallas at the conclusion of a recent Black Lives Matter protest.
Sheriff Clarke said Mr. Trump is the “steadfast” leader the country needs.
“Throughout his campaign and over many years before he has consistently and constantly raised his voice not only in defense of the character of the American police officer, but the need for all people to feel they are being treated fairly and respectfully by law enforcement,” Sheriff Clarke said.
