An ax-wielding man in Würzburg, Germany, screamed “Allahu Akbar!” on Monday before injuring at least five people during a train attack.
The suspect fled the Würzburg-Heidingsfeld train after his rampage and was soon shot and killed by officers, a police spokesman on the scene told BBC.
Bavaria’s interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, said the suspect was a 17-year-old Afghan citizen, Deutsche Well reported.
The train line has closed since authorities converged on the scene.
Police said some people faced life-threatening. Fourteen were treated for shock.
Monday’s attack eerily echoes the May 22, 2013, killing of British soldier Lee Rigby by Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale. The two British Muslims ran the Afghan war veteran down with a car in London before killing him with knives and a cleaver.
The two men were convicted of murder in February 2014 and sentenced to life in prison for their crimes.
“You do not expect to see this on the streets of the United Kingdom,” Rigby’s wife, Rebecca, said Feb. 26, 2014, Reuters reported.
