New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Monday that likely Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s email scandal showed that she stands for “lawlessness” and would always put her personal interests before the safety and security of Americans.
Stumping with likely GOP nominee Donald Trump, Mr. Christie assailed Mrs. Clinton for mishandling classified material as secretary of state and repeatedly lying to the American people about her secret email setup, as outlined last week by FBI Director James B. Comey.
“That’s not a person who will stand for the rule of law. That’s a person who will stand for the rule of her, and that’s not a person we need in the White House,” Mr. Christie said at a campaign event in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Mrs. Clinton’s secret email server and mishandling of classified material, which Mr. Comey described as “extreme carelessness,” have become a top issue for the Republican campaign.
“In this election there can be little question about where law and order stands and where lawlessness stands,” said the governor.
At the same event, Mr. Trump vowed to be the “law and order candidate” and restore safety to American communities.
Mr. Christie is one of the possible picks for vice president the Mr. Trump has been trying out on the campaign trail. The billionaire businessman is expected to announce his running mate as soon as this week.
Mr. Christie, who ran for the GOP nomination but dropped out early after failing to gain traction in the race, is a longtime friend of Mr. Trump. He’s also known for being a campaign attack dog.
He said that Mr. Trump would “put people in his administration who understand that the rules in the country and the laws in this country apply to everyone, not just the least powerful but also the most powerful — they apply to everyone.”
