Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump says his line about not too many evangelicals coming out of Cuba is said with a smile and that he’s not going to question anyone’s faith.

“I’m Protestant, I’m Presbyterian, which means something — which means something to the evangelicals, it does,” Mr. Trump said in an interview that aired Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

He had been asked about new NBC/SurveyMonkey poll numbers showing him leading the GOP field among white evangelicals, with Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas — whose father hails from Cuba — in second place.

“And I always say, and I say it with a smile, not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba, where you have Ted,” Mr. Trump said. “And I do — I say it with a smile, [because] I don’t know. I’m not [going to] question anybody’s faith.”

“But I am somehow really resonating. In fact, I have great support from some of the ministers and pastors … lot of people,” Mr. Trump said.
