GOP presidential contender Ted Cruz took aim at the “mainstream media” Tuesday by charging in a new television ad that it would see the issue of illegal immigration through a different prism if a herd of lawyers, bankers and journalists were charging across the U.S.-Mexico border.

The new “invasion” ad depicts a swarm of women in high heels, and men in black suits and ties, with some carrying briefcases atop their heads, others struggling to hang onto their laptop computers, sprinting across a desert and clumsily wading across a river.

“I understand that when the mainstream media covers immigration, it doesn’t often see it as an economic issue, but I can tell you, it is a very personal economic issue,” Mr. Cruz says in the ad, replaying comments he made on a debate stage earlier this year. “And I will say the politics of it would be very, very, different if a bunch of lawyers or bankers were crossing the Rio Grande, or if a bunch of people with journalism degrees were coming over and driving down the wages in the press then we would see stories about the economic calamity that is befallen our nation.”

The Cruz campaign said the 30-second ad would run statewide in New Hampshire beginning Tuesday.

Mr. Cruz has taken a hard-line stance on immigration, vowing to take a strict stand against both legal and illegal immigration. He has promised to enforce laws on the books and shifted on the issue of legal immigration, saying he no longer supports the massive increases that he once did.
