Former Sen. Rick Santorum’s presidential campaign released its first television ad Monday — an ad that includes footage of Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas reading “Green Eggs and Ham” on the Senate floor and a clip of Mr. Cruz reading to his daughters.

“Ted Cruz is wonderful at reading children’s fairy tales on the Senate floor,” a narrator says in the minute-long spot.

Mr. Cruz had read the Dr. Seuss book to his daughters on the floor during his fight in the fall of 2013 to defund President Obama’s health care law.

“Rick Santorum spent his time in the Senate a little differently,” the ad continues, going on to tout Mr. Santorum’s eight years on the Senate Armed Services Committee and his work to modernize the army and pass strong sanctions against Iran.

“And for more than a decade, Rick Santorum has been a leader taking on radical Islam,” the ad says.

“You want someone to read one hell of a bedtime story, Ted Cruz is your guy,” the ad continues, showing a clip of Mr. Cruz reading to his daughters. “If you want to protect America and defeat ISIS, Rick Santorum’s your president. Because serious times need serious people.”

Mr. Santorum’s campaign said the ad will air on network, cable and digital platforms in Iowa starting this week.

Mr. Cruz, who leads in the state in the latest RealClearPolitics average, is launching a six-day bus tour there this week.
