Former Maryland coach Randy Edsall has been hired by the Detroit Lions to serve as their director of football research.

Edsall, who was fired in the middle of his fifth season in October, went 22-34 with the Terrapins after taking over in 2011.

According to the Lions, the football research department assists with game preparation and aids the team’s acquisition of players.

New Lions general manager Bob Quinn was a graduate assistant at UConn in 1999, when Edsall was the team’s coach. He guided the Huskies until leaving for Maryland at the end of the 2010 season and was previously the defensive backs coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1994 through 1997.

Maryland hired D.J. Durkin, formerly Michigan’s defensive coordinator, as its coach in December.
