COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Whether or not you agree with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on the issues, there is no debating who has the campaign’s best Donald Trump impression.
The Republican presidential candidate drew guffaws at a campaign appearance Sunday as he described Mr. Trump’s plan to build a wall along the southern border and then charge it to the president of Mexico, saying, “He’s not going to pay for it.”
“I don’t care who asks. I don’t care how beautiful the wall is,” said Mr. Christie, at which point he began channeling The Donald.
“’It’s a big, it’s a beautiful wall. We’ll build it across the entire [border],’” Mr. Christie said in a Trump-like New York accent. “’The wall will look fabulous, and it will have a door in the middle of it and the door will open and close, and the good people will go in and the bad people will come out, and it will be a beautiful wall and have my name on it. Everybody will love it. It’ll be a great wall.’”
Speaking to a crowd at Quaker Steak & Lube, a popular chicken wings joint, Mr. Christie compared his experience as chief executive with Mr. Trump’s background.
“Let’s not send somebody to the White House whose only experience is being in a fake boardroom in New York City looking into a camera and saying, ’You’re fired,’ ” Mr. Christie said.
The Iowa Poll released Saturday shows Mr. Trump leading the Republican field going into Monday’s caucuses with 28 percent and Mr. Christie notched at 3 percent.
