NASHUA, New Hampshire — Real estate mogul Donald Trump has added a new wrinkle to his line of attack against Sen. Ted Cruz, calling the Texas Republican an “anchor baby” during a campaign stop here on Friday.
“Ted Cruz is an anchor baby in Canada,” Mr. Trump said, sparking laughter from those in attendance.
For months, Mr. Trump and Mr. Cruz shied away from trading punches, but that has changed in dramatic fashion in recent weeks as they look to lock in votes ahead of Monday’s Iowa caucuses and the Feb. 9 New Hampshire primary.
The New York billionaire has repeatedly warned that Mr. Cruz must settle lingering constitutional questions over his eligibility to be president after being born to an American mother in Canada.
Mr. Cruz, who renounced his dual citizenship in 2014 after being elected in 2012, has dismissed the attack — though some polls’ findings have suggested that it could haunt him in the early nomination contests.
“How about this: He was citizen of Canada, and he was a senator from Texas,” Mr. Trump said. “How the hell does that work?”
