Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday he’s “kind of pulling” for Donald Trump to win the GOP’s presidential nomination, agreeing with the billionaire businessman that they used to work well together.
The Nevada Democrat said Mr. Trump even held “a fundraiser or two for me” in previous years, and said they’ve “gotten along fine.”
“With that bunch of people running, I’m kind of pulling for him,” Mr. Reid said.
A few minutes later he insisted he was “trying to be funny” with his comments, saying he’s enjoyed his time watching the Republican candidates bruise each other in what’s become a divisive primary.
His comments came after Mr. Trump earlier this week said he’d be able to work with Mr. Reid, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Charles E. Schumer, who is slated to replace Mr. Reid as Senate Democrats’ leader next year.
Earlier this month Mr. Reid had been excoriating in his comments on Mr. Trump, saying his ideas were far out of the American mainstream. Mr. Reid said he and fellow Democrats would even start offering Mr. Trump’s proposals as amendments on bills, hoping to force Senate Republicans into taking tough votes that would make them have to support or oppose their presidential front-runner.
