A new television ad from Sen. Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign uses GOP rival Donald Trump’s past comments on abortion and the state of Iowa against him.
“I mean, hey, I lived in New York City and Manhattan all my life, OK?” Mr. Trump says in an old interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” in the ad. “So my views are a little bit different than if I lived in Iowa.”
Asked if he would ban partial-birth abortion, Mr. Trump said then: “Look, I am pro-choice in every respect.”
“And what does Trump think about Iowa?” a narrator says.
“How stupid are the people of Iowa?” Mr. Trump then says. That remark came at an event last year when Mr. Trump was questioning aspects of 2016 GOP rival Ben Carson’s life story.
“Donald Trump: New York values, not ours,” a narrator says.
The ad will start running statewide in Iowa on Tuesday and reprises Mr. Cruz’s recent contention that Mr. Trump embodies “New York values.”
Mr. Trump said Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that he is pro-life, “and everyone understands that.”
“Going into the second thing about how stupid are the people of Iowa, then I said, ’How stupid are the people [of] the United States?’ ” Mr. Trump said. “Because everybody in this country was believing, I’m not going to mention his name … I said Iowa and then I said [the] United States. He didn’t put United States. Because Ted Cruz lies.”
