They were there when Sen. Bernie Sanders announced his candidacy for president last summer. And they’re back to campaign for the Democratic hopeful in their own style. Ben & Jerry’s ice cream co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield have gone to Iowa to talk up the 74-year-old, self-described socialist among voters at multiple events.
Then there’s the ice cream.
Mr Cohen in particular took it upon himself to make an extremely limited edition ice cream flavor after the candidate - “Bernie’s Yearning.” It is a fairly simple concoction: mint ice cream topped by a big disc of chocolate. Mr. Cohen created just 40 pints of the flavor in his own kitchen, with the instructions “Open joyfully. Political revolution inside.”
The maker explains, “Jerry and I have been constituents of Bernie Sanders for the last 30 years. We’ve seen him in action and we believe in him. When we’re out speaking on his behalf people always ask if there’s a Ben and Jerry’s flavor. There’s not. But if I were going to come up with one, this is what it would be.”
Bernie’s Yearning is now being used as a campaign tool, however; a contest is now underway among Sanders fans to win the precious few pints. And yes, there’s an official disclaimer included in the outreach: “Ben & Jerry’s Homemade, Inc. has nothing to do with this pint of ice cream. All costs associated, except from Ben’s labor which has been volunteered, have been paid by Bernie 2016.
