CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cam Newton threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others, and the Carolina Panthers’ big-play defense stifled the Arizona Cardinals’ top-ranked offense in a 49-15 romp on Sunday in the NFC championship.
Newton will lead the Panthers against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl on Feb. 7 in Santa Clara, California.
It will be the first Super Bowl for Newton and the second trip to the big game for the Panthers, who lost to the New England Patriots in their last appearance 12 years ago. Denver, of course, has made a habit of going to the Super Bowl, reaching it for a record-tying eighth time.
Carolina’s defense forced six turnovers by Carson Palmer as the Cardinals allowed their most points this season.
